Importing into Australia

It doesn’t matter what product or which port  you are importing into Australia – the process to check your product clearances, work with a freight forwarder, process paperwork, arrange compliance, pay taxes and deliver the product is the same.

Importing into Australia presents unique challenges, because we unfortunately have so many rules and regulations here, dictated by different all levels of government and industry.

Here are the major areas to be across when importing into Australia:

The key is preparation – don’t commit to a product order overseas until you have done the following:

  • Checked Compliance requirements
  • Costs from factory to your doorstep – with over 20 cost areas to consider
  • Decided on a local freight forwarder that understands your product and business needs

Importing Goods to Australia

There are a few make or break areas that seem to continuously catch people out when importing goods to Australia, both new and experienced. Because the rules change, government policy comes and goes, customs and quarantine tighten and relax restrictions, and products evolve – while policy makers scramble to catch-up.

Here are the essentials for importing goods into Australia:

  • Is it a high risk product – check compliance risk requirements that cover the safety of the user
  • Is it made from flora or fauna – think about sub components as well
  • What about chemical inputs – that may trigger allergies or be flagged on banned lists
  • Australian standards – is the product subject to mandatory or voluntary standards

So run through these and check your product. If you want to really get ahead of the game, let’s look at what do to do cut your costs right down:

  • Minimise the duty payable – work with a local customs broker who can find duty exemptions. Check if a FTA (Free Trade Agreement) applies to your product, with lower or zero duty
  • Reclaim duty paid – if your product is then exported overseas, you can reclaim duty paid
  • Minimise GST and duty – keep samples and small volume orders below $1000

Importing to Australia

Let’s look at the basics for importing to Australia:

  • Product weight and CBM – is it better shipped by sea or air?

You need to have a dual strategy for shipping the bulk of your products cost effectively, or quickly. Depending on product, samples and short run orders are best air freighted, while sea is obviously the most cost effective for bulky products and anything above a pallet.
You are best chatting to a local freight forwarder before committing to importing to Australia however.

  • Product markings – what is stipulated by Customs and fair trading. Typically leather and shoes and products with certain components, such as lead have stipulations governing their import. It’s pretty easy to comply with, just FIND OUT FIRST.

Overseas manufacturers, particularly Chinese manufacturers with export experience to major markets are familiar with how to comply, and it is often just another part of the production process.

  • Consumer Laws – the ACCC replaced the long standing Trade Practices Act in 2011, and now the Australian Consumer Law is thankfully a more centralised and easily understood series of guidelines and rules for bringing product to market in Australia.

Australian Consumer Law is implemented by the offices of fair trading in each state and territory in Australia
